FTP Server Instructions

HOW TO ACCESS THE PROJECT CONTROL ENGINEERING FTP SERVER

This site provides a means for our clients and team members to transfer data files, particularly files that are too large for email. This site is password-protected. If you do not have a username and password, please contact us at PCE.

Go directly to the FTP site…

Instructions

After clicking on the link above, you will be asked for your username and password. Entering it will take you to the directory which we have set up for your project.

For downloading files only, any web browser should work fine.

For uploading files, you should use Internet Explorer (IE) Version 6 and above, or a third party FTP software. You can also add this site to your My Network Places folder on your computer (see below).

Using Internet Explorer 6

At the logon prompt, enter your username and password. You should see a window open in your browser that closely resembles Windows File Explorer. You can drag files to and from this window in the same way as you move files between folders on your own computer. Do not double click a file to open it directly since this will be very slow. Copy it to your computer first.

Using Internet Explorer 7

IE 7 requires an extra step, for security purposes. Once you enter your username and password, a listing of filenames will appear, but you can only download. If you want to upload, you need to open the site in Windows Explorer. At the top of the web page you will see these instructions:

“To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer.”

Follow those instructions to view our site in Windows Explorer, and be able to upload and download. The Page button is in the little toolbar just above the upper right corner of website. Once you do this, an Explorer window will open, and you can then move files around as described above for IE 6.

Using Internet Explorer 8 and Above

With IE 8 and above, you cannot download or upload from the window open in your browser. You can only view the file. If you want to upload and download files, you need to open the site in Windows Explorer. At the top of the web page you will see these instructions. At the top of the web page you will see these instructions:

“To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer.”

In Windows Explorer, you’ll be able to upload and download by dragging and dropping files to and from this windows.

Mozilla Firefox Version 6.0

At the logon prompt, enter your username and password. It should take you to the directory which we have set up for you. From this window, you can download the files by right clicking the file and choose the “Save Link As” in the sub-menu. The “Save As” dialog box will appear, choose the directory and save the file using either the default name or a new filename.

“Do not drag and drop the files to your computer, this will only save a shortcut copy of the files and not the actual file.”

As for uploading, Firefox does not allow you to upload files directly from the browser. However, Mozilla does offer an add-on called FireFTP (free) for firefox which can be use to upload and download files.

Instructions to download and use FireFTP.

Download FireFTP (see “FTP software”), install add-on, and then restart browser.
Logon to our FTP website with Firefox and then right click anywhere on this page and select “View this Page in FireFTP”
Enter your username and password again. A window with dual pane will appear. The left pane is your local computer directory and the right pane is your ftp directory assigned by us. In this window, you can drag and drop the file, right click the file, or use the green arrows to upload and download files.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome does not support FTP upload. You can only download. To download, right click the file and choose the “Save Link As” in the sub-menu. Choose the directory you want to save the file to, then save the file using either the default name or a new file name. If you have to upload files via FTP, use a different browser or use a third party software like FileZilla (free FTP software for uploading and downloading). For more information about Filezilla, please check out their website using the link under “FTP software”
